Hypoadiponectinemia as a risk factor for atherosclerosis?

Hypoadiponectinemia as a Risk Factor for Atherosclerosis? To the Editor: We want to comment on and complete the cited references of the article by Iglseder et al1 that demonstrated an independent negative association between adiponectin levels and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT). With reference to this, our group also found an inverse and independent correlation between adiponectin and carotid IMT.2 Our data were derived from 240 subjects of the Styrian Juvenile Obesity Study (STYJOBS).2 However, we also have to note that not all studies in this field report about a significant negative association between adiponectin and carotid IMT.3 Thus, the confirmation of our results by Iglseder et al underlines the close association between low adiponectin and early atherosclerosis. Further, the notion of a protective function of adiponectin in coronary artery disease (CAD) is also supported by longitudinal studies that implicated an association between hypoadiponectinemia and CAD.4,5 Controversial to this, 2 recent studies failed to observe a significant prospective association between low adiponectin levels and the develpoment of CAD.6,7 Taken together, the diagnostic or even therapeutic potential of adiponectin in cardiovascular disease remains to be clarified.8

Plasma Adiponectin Levels and Sonographic Phenotypes of Subclinical Carotid Artery Atherosclerosis
Background and Purpose—Adipose tissue produces and secretes a number of bioactive molecules, conceptualized as adipocytokines. Adiponectin has been identified as one of the adipocytokines, and hypoadiponectinemia was demonstrated in patients with obesity, diabetes mellitus, and coronary artery disease. Whether decreased adiponectin levels are cause or consequence is an important issue in the di...

OBJECTIVES Pericardial fat as a visceral fat depot may be involved in the pathogenesis of coronary atherosclerosis. To gain evidence for that concept we sought to investigate the relation of pericardial fat volumes to risk factors, serum adiponectin levels, inflammatory biomarkers, and the quantity and morphology of coronary atherosclerosis. METHODS AND RESULTS Using Dual source CT angiograph...

متن کاملThe role of adiponectin in atherosclerosis and thrombosis.
Obesity is a major risk factor for morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular causes. Adiponectin has been identified recently as one of the adipocytokines with important metabolic effects. It can suppress atherogenesis by inhibiting the adherence of monocytes, reducing their phagocytic activity, and suppressing the accumulation of modified lipoproteins in the vascular wall. In addition, as ad...
متن کاملSystemic adiponectin malfunction as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
Adiponectin (Ad) is an abundant protein hormone regulatory of numerous metabolic processes. The 30 kDa protein originates from adipose tissue, with full-length and globular domain circulatory forms. A collagenous domain within Ad leads to spontaneous self-assemblage into various oligomeric isoforms, including trimers, hexamers, and high-molecular-weight multimers. Two membrane-spanning receptor...
